  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

The Deaf Women’s Guild started as the Ladies Committee with fortnightly meetings in 1922 when the Adult Deaf and Dumb Society of NSW had its headquarters in Daking House, Sydney. In 1923 the Committee reformed as the Deaf Women’s Guild. In 1928 the Guild purchased No.5 Elizabeth Street, Sydney, the new venue for its meetings. When the Deaf members had friction with the Adult Deaf & Dumb Society’s Board of Management in the same year over the appointment of a welfare office, with most of the ladies transferring their interest to the new deaf organisation, NSW Association of Deaf and Dumb Citizens, the Guild continued its activities at No.5 Elizabeth Street. Following the introduction of the Charity Collections Act by the NSW Government in 1934, a successful amalgamation of the two deaf organisations was arranged during 1937, and accordingly the two deaf women’s groups united retaining the title of Deaf Widows Guild. Among the Guild’s social activities was the Deaf Camera Club of NSW, whose founding Honorary Secretary was Dorothy Sankey, which operated from 1961 to 1977.
