  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Pieter Nuyts, Dutch navigator, was born in Amsterdam ca. 1600. He studied commerce, and made several voyages to the African Coast. In 1627, his family equipped a ship for trade in Asia. On route to Batavia, the ship went off course, and put ashore on an unknown coast - this was part of South East Australia, which was named Nuytsland after him. Soon after his arrival in Batavia, the Council of Batavia named him ambassador to Japan and Governor of Taiyouan. On his return to Batavia, he was imprisoned because of rumours of his ill-conduct in Taiyouan. It was during his imprisonment that he wrote the report and his autograph letter
