Following the establishment of several masonic lodges in rapid succession in New South Wales and Victoria, a Deputy Provincial Grand Master was appointed in 1839, with power to act for the Grand Lodge of England. The Provincial Grand Lodge of New South Wales was established in 1848 and in 1888 merged with the Provincial Grand Lodge of England and Scotland to form the United Grand Lodge of New South Wales. The Freemason's Orphan Society was one of the Benevolent Institutions of the Provincial Grand Lodge of New South Wales, with the object 'to maintain, clothe, educate, and if desirable, apprentice children or orphans of decayed or deceased Freemasons' - Scope and ContentVarious printed papers with manuscript amendments and annotations.
