  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    The Proteus under the command of Captain Sylvester Browne left Sydney in April 1833 on a whaling expedition and went to the 'Middle Ground' (27 deg. south to 21 deg. south) via Bampton Reef and Rennell Islands.

    In July to September she went to the Solomon Islands, Sir Charles Hardy Island, New Ireland and New Hanover. In October she went to Santa Crus and then sailed to New Zealand visited the Bay of Islands in january 1834 and then returned to Sydney to unload her oil.

    Description includes navigational and weather information, the general activities of the ship, number of whales chased and killed, deaths at sea, insubordination among the crew, attack on crew by natives of Santa Crus resulting in death of one crew member, visit to Bay of Islands, New Zealand to get fresh supplies, name of whaling ships met and return to Sydney.
