    Hyacinthe Yves Philippe Potentin de Bougainville, French naval officer and explorer, was the eldest son of Louis de Bougainville, who explored the Pacific in the latter half of the eighteenth century. Hyacinthe de Bougainville, on a voyage to protect French commercial interests, took out to the Pacific the frigate Thetis and the corvette Esperance. On visiting Sydney in the course of his explorations, he commenced the erection of the monument to La Perouse on Botany Bay. Edmond Bigot de La Touanne was a lieutenant on the Thetis.
