    Pitcairn Island was discovered by Philip Carteret in 1767. Due to an error in charting it was not visited again until 1808 when the presence of the Bounty Mutineers was discovered. In 1814 the Briton and the Tagus under the Command of Sir Thomas Staines and Captain Pipon visited the island

Original account of the finding the home of the Mutineers of the 'Bounty' after the lapse of twenty-five years on Pitcairn Island by Capt. P. Pipon of the 'Tagus' who in company with Sir Thomas Staines commanding the 'Briton' discovered on the morning of the 17 Septr 1814, the Island inhabited by John Adams (the only mutineer living) and the descendants of the Mutineers'
