  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    John Piper, 1773-1851, military officer, public servant and land owner, was born in Ayrshire. In 1791, he became an ensign in the New South Wales Corps, and arrived in Sydney February 1792. In 1816 he was granted 190 acres near Rose Bay, where he built his official residence. He owned much property, but in 1827, became insolvent, resigned his position and retired to his Bathurst property, Alloway Bank and became an important figure in the town, was forced to sell in 1838
