    Dumont D'Urville, French naval officer and navigator, was commander of two expeditions, 1826-1829, 1837-1840, of exploration in the Antarctic and the Pacific visiting Australia and New Zealand. In 1840 he discovered Adelie land in Antarctica and on his return to France he was promoted to rear-admiral in recognition of the considerable scientific achievements of the expedition
