Brown arrived in New South Wales from Scotland in 1823 and later received a grant of land at Bowenfels where he built Cooerwull House. The journal was written at Cooerwull, during numerous visits to his property Caigan, New South Wales, overland journey to Moreton Bay 1846 and visits to New Zealand and Great Britain. Copies of old photographs included in volume 1.
