Philip Carteret, British naval officer and navigator was 1st Lieutenant of HMS Tamar, and later HMS Dolphin in John Byron's voyage, 1764 to 1766. During the voyage to discover a southern continent in the Pacific, 1766-1769, Carteret, in HMS Swallow accidentally separated from the commander Captain S. Wallis in HMS Dolphin while following the passage through the Straits of Megellan. Sailing alone, the Swallow under Carteret went on to discover in the Pacific the Strait separating New Britain from New Ireland and Pitcairn Island. He served in the West Indies, 1771-1781, was appointed rear-admiral in 1794, in which year he retired, and died in 1796.
