William Carron, 1821-1876, botanist and explorer, was born in England and arrived in Sydney by the Royal Saxon in 1844. He worked as a gardener, and in 1848 accompanied Edmund Kennedy's expedition to Cape York as a botanist. Of the original thirteen in the expedition, only carron, Jacky Jacky, and aborigine, and one other survived. In 1849 Carron published 'A Narrative of an expedition undertaken under the direction of the late E. B. Kennedy for the exploration of the country lying between Rockingham Bay and Cape York'. In 1855, Carron was appointed collector for the Sydney Botanic Gardens - Scope and ContentCarron's journal of the expedition from Rockingham Bay to Cape York written up from his rough notes as fair copy, and basis for his published work. Describes the terrain covered, with particular emphasis on the botany of the area and encounters with aborigines
