  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Hugh Francis Carleton, politician and journalist, was born in Ireland 1810. He studied in London , and arrived in Auckland in 145. From time to time he undertook editorial work on the New Zealander, and in 1848, established his own newspaper. He was a member of the House of Representatives for nearly 30 years, and was for many years Speaker of the Auckland Provincial council. In 1880, he returned to England, and died in London 1890

    a. Papers, 1846-1870
    Mainly regarding the establishment and early days of responsible government in New Zealand, including correspondence, petitions, lists of signatures, testimonials, printed election broadsheets, lists of magistrates for the Province of Auckland and copy of Bill. Much of the material concerns Carleton's opposition to Governor Grey, and includes a letter from Henry Sewell attacking Grey. It also includes material relating to the acquisition of land, and Lt. Col. Wynyard's influence on the elections
