Eve Langley (1904-1974) was born in Australia and moved to New Zealand in 1932 where she married Hilary Clark, on 6 January 1937 at the registrar's office, Auckland, a 22-year-old art student. By 1941 they had a daughter Bisi Arilev, and two sons, Langley Rhaviley and Karl Marx. Eve's husband had her admitted to Auckland Mental Hospital in August 1942 when she was emotionally disturbed. She was released into her sister's care in March 1949 and divorced in 1952. She later returned to Sydney and spent the latter part of her life as a recluse in the Blue Mountains. She is best known for her novel 'The Pea Pickers', published in 1942. A companion novel, 'White Topee', followed in 1954. Langley also wrote a considerable number of poems, some of which were published in The Bulletin's Red Page.
