The manuscript commences with a note in the same hand stating that 'the following interesting narrative was given to me by a friend who sailed on the same ship with Mr. Atkin, subsequent to the events narrated: and was copied by him from his journal'. It is written in diary form covering the dates 17 November 1828 to 17 March 1829.

This account with many alterations in details was published in the United Service Journal, pt. 1, 1830 pages 649-658 and a much edited version, possibly from another text, appeared in R. McNab, Historical Records of New Zealand 1908, vol. 1 pages 687-698.
