The writers were the first members of the Society of Friends to visit Australia on a religious mission. They reached Hobart in 1832, proceeding later to Sydney, Norfolk Island and the other Australian colonies. Backhouse studied botany of which he had practical experience in British nurseries before coming to Australia.
