Arnold came first to Sydney as surgeon on the Hindostan which accompanied Macquarie when he came out with the 73rd Regiment to take over the governorship of New South Wales in 1809. He paid a second visit to the colony in 1815 as surgeon on the convict transport Northampton. His journals and letters for this period give detailed accounts of the official and social life and the natural history of the colony.
