John Russell, born 1818, emigrated from Scotland to Tasmania in 1831. In 1838 he established an engineering business in Sydney with his brother Peter. He married in 1855 Charlotte Ann Nicholl, daughter of the English sculptor William Grinsell Nicholl, ca. 1796-1871, who had resided in Sydney 1850-1854.
