• ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY
  
  John Armstrong was born in Ireland, 23 Feb. 1814. In the 1840s he came with his wife Marion to Australia where they taught at a Church of England school in Cobbity, New South Wales. After disagreements with their employer, the Reverend Thomas Hassall, they moved to Sydney and taught at Chippendale and Redfern. Armstrong was involved with the Sydney Mechanics' School of Arts and the 1851 Political Association.
