    E. C. Close, 1790-1866, arrived in New South Wales in 1817 with the 48th Regiment. He later settled in the Hunter River District acquiring in all 5,800 acres of land. In 1834 he subdivided part of his estate, and on the subdivision the town of Morpeth came into existence
