Box 3 predominately contains photographs attributed to Ted Ryko. Ryko captioned all his photographs with handwritten titles. On some of the photographs, for example, the buckjumper images, he has written “Ryko photo, copyright” in the same hand as the captions.
Originally named Edward (Eddie) Reichenbach, Ted Ryko was Australian born, from German heritage and changed his name during World War I. Ryko was a photographer and a cyclist and set a speed record by cycling from Adelaide to Darwin in 28 days in 1914. He stayed in Darwin until 1917. He operated a photography studio on Cavenagh Street in 1915 and visited remote areas of the Northern Territory, including Aboriginal missions where he photographed Aboriginal people and landscapes. He left Darwin in March 1917 as military intelligence were suspicious that he was a German spy due to his extensive travelling and photography.
