James Taylor (1814-1885) was the Agent for the Hunter River Steam Navigation Company and a major merchant at Morpeth. Known as "Lord Morpeth", he built a bond store near the bridge, now heritage listed, and his grand residence "Marlborough House".

  • Scope and Content
Two letters detailing trade and financial transactions of Taylor. In the first he writes, 'the accounts of the heavy failures in England (the crash of 1847) appear to have quite staggered the Sydney Merchants, and we are just beginning to feel the bad effects of the prices...the people in this country are all involved more or less, and nothing but good seasons and good prices will keep them on their legs'. The letter is addressed to his agents Messrs Hill & Co. of Bristol to inform them of a shipment of some 32 bales of wool, five casks of tallow and 3000 horns coming on the vessel 'Thomas Lowry'. He indicates that he would like his remittance in 'Rums of 10 o.p. (Demara or such like)'.
The second letter, related to the first, is written on behalf of the Bank of Australasia to Hill & Co. regarding two of Taylor's bank drafts.
Also includes a transcription of one of the letters.
