    Rowan Nicks was born in New Zealand in 1914, he studied Medicine at Otago Medical School and graduated in 1937. He served in the Royal Navy throughout the war mainly. After the war he worked in a number of cardio-thoracic units around the world before coming to Sydney in 1956. Later in his career he took his work to Port Moresby, India, Iran, the UK, Malaysia, and also to Tanzania. He retired in 1973 remaining active in the profession and died in Sydney in 2011.

    Edward Ernest Dunlop was born on 1907 at Major's Plain, Victoria, he studied medicine at Melbourne University and graduated in 1934. At the outbreak of the Second World War he enlisted in the Australian Army Medical Corps and served in Germany, Crete, Tobruk, the Middle East and Java where he became a prisoner of war and was sent to work on the Burma-Thailand railway. After the war he returned to Australia and resumed his thriving medical career. Dunlop also travelled widely with his work and was actively involved with many Australian and international professional bodies. He died in Melbourne in 1993

    Patrick White, best known as a novelist and a prolific correspondent, was born in London in 1912. During the Second World War he served as an intelligence officer with the RAF in Greece and the Middle East. After the War, he returned to Australia in 1948. In 1973, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature for his realistic portrayal of Australian life in novels such as The Eye of the Storm. He died in Sydney in 1990

    This collection of private correspondence includes letters from both Weary Dunlop and Patrick White to Dr Rowan Nicks AO OBE.

    FOLDER 1
    34 letters received from “Weary” Dunlop, 1977-1992
    Some of the letters have been written on blue aerogramme paper, others on Sir Edward’s personalised stationery. The letters speak of a deep and abiding friendship between the two men, who shared many things in common. Both were surgeons who served in the Second World War: Sir Edward with the Australian Army Medical Corps in the Middle East, Java and on the Burma-Thailand Railway, and Nicks with the Royal Naval Medical Service. Both men pursued distinguished medical careers after the war, and in retirement both travelled extensively: Sir Edward to Asia and India, and Nicks to Africa, promoting and training medical professionals.
