    Thomas William Roberts, artist, was born on 9 March 1856 at Dorchester, England. In 1869 he arrived in Melbourne with his widowed mother. While working as a photographer's assistant he began art training at the Artisan's School of Design, Collingwood. Later he attended the National Gallery Art School, Melbourne. In 1881 he attended the Royal Academy School, London. With Frederick McCubbin, he set up an outdoor painting camp at Box Hill, Victoria in 1885. Roberts, McCubbin, Arthur Streeton and Charles Conder established the Heidelberg School of Painters. In 1889, this group held the first Australian Impressionist Exhibition. In 1895 Roberts became foundation president of the Society of Artists. In London, in 1903, he completed the painting of the first Commonwealth Parliament. Roberts was one of the first artists to paint outback subjects. Roberts died at Kallista near Melbourne on 14 September 1931
