    Robert Copland Lethbridge was born 11 September 1838 at 'Werrington', Penrith , N.S.W., the fourth son of Robert Copland Lethbridge, pioneer and pastoralist, and Mary, the youngest daughter of Philip Gidley King, Governor of New South Wales, 1800-1806. His fathers sister, Harriet, married the third son of Governor KIng, Phillip Parker King, who settled at Dunheved, near Penrith in1832 and died at Granham, St. Leonards, in 1856. King's sister, Anna Maria married Hannibal Hawkins Macarthur of 'Vineyard Cottage', Parramatta

    Robert was educated at The King's School, Parramatta, under the headmastership of Reverend Robert Forrest. In 1855 at the age of sixteen he undertook work as a jackaroo on a station in Gippsland, Victoria, knwon as 'The Ridge'. Later he leased a property called 'Scarne' in the Gippsland. In 1872, with his family, he moved to Queensland to take possession of the property 'Forest Vale'. He died at 'Forest Vale' in October 1919
  • Scope and Content
    Brief accounts of daily events and encounters, including visits to Sydney, to Grantham, St. Leonards, and the Penrith district and attendance at church, including the service at St. Thomas, North Sydney. There are frequent references to family members, relatives, including the King family, and acquaintances and some mention of current news and events. The diary ends with the voyage to Melbourne and the arrival at 'The Ridge'
