    A journalist on the Melbourne Argus newspaper, James Hingston left Melbourne in January 1876 and travelled through Ceylon, India, Egypt, Syria, Palestine, Europe, United States of America, Japan, China, Java and Northern Australia, reaching Melbourne again in May 1877. His despatches, posted to the Argus while he was overseas, appeared under the title 'Travel Talks', over the by-line 'J.H.'
