    Crosby was a Wesleyan missionary in Tonga 1884-1892. After the formation of the breakaway Tonga Wesleyan Free Church in 1885 by S. W. Baker, Premier of Tonga, Crosby resisted Baker and remained champion of the cause of the original Wesleyan Church

    Series 01: Correspondence, 1835-1911
    A. Correspondence and documents in English mainaly addressed to Crosby, 10 June 1884 to 6 September 1900, and copies of letters by Rev. Charles Tucker 26 October 1835 to 29 August 1846. Tucker's letters describe the general social scene as well as missionary affairs

    B. Letters to Crosby in Tongan, 8 July 1884 to 30 October 1911 concerning, among other things, the persecution of Wesleyan Methodists after the formation of the Free Church and other social and political events in Tonga including a number of trials

    Includes summonses in Tongan 1885-1886, 1888, affidavits concerning the religious persecutions in English or Tongan 1885, and evidence in the case of Baker v Hanslip, in English, 1887

    Photocopies of newscuttings, manuscript and cartoons, 1885-1886, concerning S. W. Baker, J. Watkin and the persecution of Wesleyans

    Publication in Tongan 'concerning libels which have been published by Mr Baker', 1890, with partial manuscript translation in English

    Series 05: Historical notes
    Includes a chronology of Tonga, with bibliography and a series of extracts ca. 1831-1859 regarding King George of Tonga. In Tongan or English

    Series 06: Photographs, albumen
    Fascicle includes twenty four photographs of Crosby, his family and his mission, groups of Tongans in European and national dress, portraits of important Tongans, Wesleyan ministers of Tonga, a thatched hut and the memorial to Tevita Uga
