Mark Tarmo was born in 1957 in Bankstown, New South Wales to Estonian parents. He was first diagnosed with a mental illness when 18 years old and admitted to Chelmsford Hospital in 1975. Between 1977 and 1983 he completed a Commerce Degree at the University of New South Wales. He travelled to Europe and visited Estonia in 1984. He has worked at Westmead Hospital since 1987. He has written extensively about his life and ongoing illness, and kept detailed journals of his daily Bible readings and related Christian devotional thoughts.
