Richard Tasker Furlong (ca. 1800-1852) served in the Royal Navy, but was probably travelling as a passenger on the Blendenhall when it was shipwrecked in 1821. He later joined the British Army, holding the rank of Lieutenant in the 20th (East Devonshire) Regiment from January 1826 and the 30th (Cambridgeshire) Regiment from 1830. He subsequently joined the 80th Regiment, holding the rank of Captain when the Regiment transferred from England to Australia during the 1830s. He arrived in Sydney with his wife and four children in July 1837.
