Colonel A. B. Steinberger was sent to the Samoan Islands by the American Government to obtain information abut them. He arrived August 1873 and submitted a comprehensive report, returning to America, December 1873. He returned to Samoa on 1 April 1875 and was soon appointed premier by the King of Samoa. He was deported in February 1876 on the H.M.S. Barracouta
