  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Professor Leo Dement MBE (1900-1985) was a pianist, conductor and singing teacher who taught at the New South Wales State Conservatorium of Music, Sydney, for 25 years between 1949 and 1975. Born in Denmark, he emigrated to Australia during WWII at the invitation of Eugene Goossens. Leo Demant was granted The Order of the British Empire - Member (Civil) on 31 December 1977.

  • Collection history
    Mrs Eileen Prosser was the neighbour of Professor Leo Demant at St. Ives in Sydney. Demant died on 4 May, 1985 and Mrs Prosser kept his papers and donated them to the Mitchell Library in 1989.
  • Scope and Content
    Box 1. Four scrapbook albums including correspondence, newspaper clippings, printed ephemera and some manuscript notes and annotations, 1943-1947.
    Box 2. Four folders of loose printed material, including programs, invitations, ephemera, notes, and framed certificate of appreciation from The Conservatorium Association (New South Wales State Conservatorium of Music) dated 38 November, 1980.
    Box 3. Four large folders of newspaper clippings, 1943-1967.
    Box 4. One small photograph album and two folders of loose photographs, 1943-1977.
