    a. Diary, 1 January--20 November 1858. Covers voyage on Wild Wave until it was wrecked on 5 March on Oeno atoll. Knowles then voyaged in a life boat to Pitcairn Island where he stayed until 23 July, returned to San Francisco by several ships via the Marquesas, Tahiti, Honolulu, arriving on 27 September. He then went to New York. Includes financial accounts for January, February. August, September and lists of officers on the U.S. sloop of war Vandalia and the French corvette, Eurydice, 1858
