  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Vincent James Dowling, explorer and pastoralist, was born in Flinton, N.S,W, on 11 January 1835. In 1859 he established a station on the Darling River, N.S.W., prior to which he had overlanded sheep and cattle from N.S.W. to the Victorian markets. In 1860 he became a justice of the peace for N.S.W. and in 1862 for Queensland. After having traced the Paroo River to its source, Dowling founded the Caiwarroo and Eulo stations on the Paroo River, Queensland in 1861 as well as others in both Queensland and N.S.W. In about 1863 he went into partnership with George Henry Cox. On 4 May 1866, Dowling married Frances Emily Breillat. He continued to establish and purchase stations over a wide area. In August 1876 Dowing left Sydney , N.S.W. to tour the East, America and England. On 5 November Dowling died from heart disease at Neotsfield, Singleton, N.S.W.
