  • Scope and Content
The journal was apparently kept as a record for the Rev. William Charles Cotton during his absence from St John's College. It concerns the day-today life, new buildings and extensions to the college and contains many references to Bishop Selwyn. It is illustrated with sketches and diagrams. The journal is written from beginning to end of the volume on the rectos, then back on the versos of the pages. It is all in the same hand except entries for 23-26 September 1845 which are in another hand, presumably Dale's (see entry for 27 September). Correspondence between Dr. W. Myres, Frodsham, and A. T. Williams, Christchurch, New Zealand, 1948-1949 giving information about Cotton and the Cotton family and notes by Dixson Library officer 1957 are with the volume. Before the entry for 21 November is a page inscribed 'Dingy No. 2 Nov. 21st MDCCCXLVI.' Someone has queried this dat in pencil thus '1846? see 1st entry' but the date 1846 agrees with another of Cotton's absences

    Positive microfilm is at MAV / FM3 / 265
