Elizabeth Macquarie was born in 1778, the youngest daughter of John Campbell of Airds, Scotland. She married Lachlan Macquarie in 1807 and when, two years later he was appointed Governor of New South Wales, she accompanied him to the colony. She was concerned with the welfare of Aborigines and women convicts and took a keen interest in her husband's public work programme. She also accompanied him on several arduous tours of the colony. Upon Macquarie's resignation in 1821 they returned to England, eventually retiring to their home of 'Jarvisfield' on the island of Mull. She died in 1835
