Phillip Parker King, rear-admiral and explorer, was born at Norfolk Island on 13 December 1791, the eldest son of Philip Gidley King. In February 1817, King was entrusted with the task of completing the exploration of the coast of Australia begun by Matthew Flinders. Between December 1817 and December 1820 he made three voyages in H. M. Cutter Mermaid, followed by a voyage in H. M. Brig Bathurst in 1821-1822. On his return to Sydney in April 1822 he found himself recalled to England. In 1825 he was given command of H.M.S. Adventure with instructions to survey the southern coasts of South America. These surveys were carried out between 1826-1830. King died at North Sydney, N.S.W. on 26 February 1856 - Scope and ContentInclude references to voyages on board H. M. Cutter Mermaid, 1818-1820, H.
