    James Marr Brydon, born 1779, grew up in Scotland and studied medicine at Edinburgh University. He first sailed as ship's surgeon to Madras and Calcutta for the East India Company. He was surgeon superintendent on the convict ship Eliza which he boarded on 9 September 1819 and reached Sydney on 21 January 1820. He sailed for England on 9 September 1820
  • Scope and Content
    Includes a detailed inventory of provisions and medical supplies aboard the Eliza, rations issued to convicts, and rules to be obeyed by them. After his arrival in Sydney, Brydone records his meetings with many prominent citizens, including Lieutenant Colonel George Johnston, whose eldest son he attended (unsuccessfully) after a fall from a horse.

    After seven months Brydone sailed for England. His narrative ends in sight of Pico, an island of the Axores group, on 27 January 1821
