Marilyn Cosgrove was born in Wagga Wagga, New South Wales, in 1954. After finishing school she trained as a teacher at the Riverina College of Advanced Education. She graduated in 1974.

She began writing books for children in 1985. Her first book, The BMX Kid, published in 1985, was the forerunner in a successful series of books which included, The Surfing Kid (1987), The Cricket Kid (1989) and The Skateboard Kid (1990). These were illustrated with photographs by John Veage and Jacqueline Lampe. Marilyn Cosgrove has published ten books for children.

She served on the committee of the New South Wales Children's Book Council and was inaugural president of the Children's Book Council, Southern Sub-Branch.

Marilyn Cosgrove died in 1991
