    Joseph Rennard Orton was born at Hull, England in 1795. He became a Methodist clergyman in 1826 and was posted to Jamaica. In 1830 he returned to England an in 1831 he was sent to Australia as leader of the Wesleyan Church. In 1835 Van Diemen's Land was made a separate district and Orton became its first chairman. He extended the area under his supervision to include the small colony at Melbourne. In 1839 he was sent to Tonga on a special mission but never reached it being stranded in New Zealand. He returned to Melbourne in 1840 where he remained until a permanent minister was appointed. He sailed for England in 1842 but died while still at sea. Throughout his time in Australia Orton was a strong supporter of the Aborigine's cause. In 1815 he married Sarah Jane Bragg and of their twelve children, four died in infancy
