    John Bumby, a Wesleyan missionary, arrived in New Zealand in 1839 and drowned in the Waitemata estuary in June 1840. Although his headquarters were at Mangungu on the Hokianga, he travelled around the North Island especially to Wellington and Taranaki. It is not clear whether this manuscript was written by Bumby or merely used by him. The fly leaf is signed J. H. B. and carries the inscription 'Hoani Hukiri Pomapi' which is a transliteration of Bumby's full name
