    Carl Von Bieren arrived in Sydney, N.S.W., on 5 December 1882 and in May 1884 formed a company to manufacture blasting powder and explosives. A powder works was constructed on land at Ingleside, N.S.W. but the buildings did not comply with government requirements. Von Bieren was eventually declared bankrupt in April 1886 and convicted of fraudulent insolvency. After 9 months in Goulburn Jail, Von Bieren returned to America
