James Shepherd, born in New South Wales in 1796, journeyed with Samuel Marsden on H.M.S. Dromedary from Sydney to the Bay of Islands Feb. 1820, and was sent by Marsden to live with the Urikapana hapu at Tai-a-mai, to preach and teach the local Maori European ways of cultivating the land. After the Oihi station in the Bay of Islands was closed he moved to Te Puna on land purchased by the Church Missionary Society - Scope and ContentThe journal contains entries made 3-4 times per week. It includes a description of the journey made to Whangarei and then to Whangaroa to choose the site of the Weslyan mission that was finally sited at Kaeo. Otherwise it refers to mission and farming activities, relationships between members of the Kerikeri mission and with the Maoris. Intertribal Maori wars are also mentioned
