    This collection comprises two copies of a reproduction of engraving signed N. Dance, pinxit, J. K. Sherwin, sculpsit with extracts from the Endeavour Journal in facsimile and roman type. Souvenir published by the Commonwealth National Library to mark the acquisition by the Library in 1923 of the Endeavour Journal and distributed to state schools.

    The broadside has a black and white portrait of Captain Cook in the centre and two extracts from the journal. One extract describes the ceremony that took place on Possession Island on 22 August 1770. The other is a passage written by Captain Cook in August 1770 after had had completed the navigation of the entire east coast of Australia.

  • Signatures / Inscriptions

    The copy at P3/43 contains the following text: "This Souvenir of Captain Cook, presented to you with the compliments of the Commonwealth Parliament Library Committee, has been prepared in order that a copy may be placed in every school in the Commonwealth. Copies may also be obtained by public institutions on application to the Librarian in charge of the Commonwealth National Library, Melbourne [illegible signature], Chairman, Commonwealth Parliament Library Committee".

    It is also signed 'From Commonweath Govt to Pub. Lib., Sept 1924?' in ink left margin
