    Richard Tasker Furlong (ca. 1800-1852) served in the Royal Navy, but was probably travelling as a passenger on the Blendenhall when it was shipwrecked in 1821. He later joined the British Army, having the rank of Lieutenant in the 20th (East Devonshire) Regiment from January 1826 and the 30th (Cambridgeshire) Regiment from 1830. He subsequently joined the 80th Regiment, having the rank of Captain when the Regiment transferred from England to Australia during the 1830s. He arrived in Sydney with his wife and four children in July 1837.

  • Scope and Content
    Manuscript account of the wreck of the ship ‘Blendenhall’ on Inaccessible Island on 23 July 1821, and the experiences of the survivors until their arrival at the Cape of Good Hope on 21 January 1822. The account is written on both sides of 23 loose foolscap leaves and is unsigned and undated. An accompanying typescript copy of the account is titled ‘The wreck of the Blendenhall, by Captain Richard Tasker Furlong, His Majesty’s 80th Regiment. 1821’. It differs in some respects from the manuscript account.
