    Ruth Park was born in Auckland, New Zealand. She came to Australia in 1942 and married the writer, D'Arcy Niland. Her novel, 'The harp in the south', won first prize in the Sydney Morning Herald novel competition and was published in 1948. Her next novel, 'Poor man's orange', was published in 1949 and in the U.S.A. in 1951

    Dame Mary Gilmore, 1865-1962, was appointed D.B.E. in 1937 in recognition of her literary and social achievements. Her final volume of poems, 'Fourteen men', was published in 1954 on her 89th birthday

    D'Arcy Niland won several literary prizes between 1948 and 1952. In 1955 his novel. 'The Shiralee', was published and won international acclaim
