In this journal Mann writes of meeting Leichhardt, the circumstances leading to the expedition and gives his opinions on the failure of the expedition. The journal is based on his diary of October 1846-9 August 1847 (DLMS 178/Item 1).
He includes a copied extract of a letter from Leichhardt dated 1 Aug. 1847 as evidence that the conduct of the party members did not contribute to the failure of the expedition, as Leichhardt had suggested.
Mann includes extracts from an account of Leichhardt's second journey by Daniel Bunce, "Travels with Dr Leichhardt in Australia", published in Melbourne in 1859.
