  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Florence Mary Taylor, 1879-1969, was born in Bristol, England and arrived in Australia in 1888. Her career as Australia's first professional woman architect and structural and civil engineer commenced in 1899

    With George Augustine Taylor, whom she married in 1907, Florence Taylor was involved in establishing the Town Planning Association of New South Wales and was a co-founder of the Building Publishing Co. Pty Ltd. From the death of George Taylor in 1928 until her retirement in 1961, Florence Taylor was both editor and producer of 'The Australasian Engineer', 'Building, Lighting and Engineering' and 'Construction'. These were to become the official journals of professional societies and a builder's association

    Florence Taylor sponsored awards in the engineering and building industries and was herself a recipient of awards including the O.B.E. and C.B.E. Her professional life was paralleled by involvement in cultural and social groups. She was patron or president of, The Arts Club, The Australian-American Association (Womens' Section), Soroptimist Club of the County of Cumberland
