  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Kenneth Slessor, 1901-1971, poet and journalist, was born at Orange, N.S.W. From 1921-1924 he worked as a reporter on the 'Sun' newspaper, Sydney, then with 'Punch' and the 'Herald', Melbourne, 1925-1926, the 'Sun', Sydney, 1926-1927, the 'Daily Guardian', Sydney, 1927 and 'Smith's Weekly', 1927-1939 of which he became editor-in-chief. From 1940-1944 he was Australian Official War Correspondent. He returned to the 'Sun' as leader-writer and literary editor, 1944-1957, then moved to the 'Daily Telegraph', Sydney in 1957

    His published poetry includes 'Earth Visitors' (1926), 'Cuckooz Contrey', (1932), 'Five Bells: XX Poems' (1939), 'One Hundred Poems: 1919-1939' (1944), 'Poems' (1957)

    Slessor died in Sydney on 30 June 1971
