The Nicholson family business was commenced in 1909 when John Nicholson and his son Stan began business with a cabin launch which was mainly hired out for picnics. Eric Nicholson joined the firm in 1912 when he left school and in 1915, when John Nicholson left the firm, Stan and Eric formed a partnership. The firm operated from Snails Bay, Balmain, N.S.W. The business expanded and continued until 1968 when it was sold. Dreadnought Engine Pty Ltd was incorporated in 1938 following the purchase of the company in 1936-1937 and its name changed to Dreadnought Trading Pty.
