Dorothy Jane Adele Helmrich was born in Sydney, N.S.W., in 1889. She was one of Australia's leading lieder singers and spent many years abroad in London, England and Europe, on extensive concert tours. She returned to Australia in 1940 under engagement to the Australian Broadcasting Commission. Prior to returning home, she had spent two years in close contact with the British Council for the Encouragement of Music and the Arts (C.E.M.A). In 1944 Dorothy Helmrich founded the Australian C.E.M.A. and was appointed President, a position which she held until her resignation in 1963. Dorothy Helmrich continued as the senior deputy president and artistic adviser of the C.E.M.A. until 1969. In 1948 the Australian C.E.M.A., following the lead of its British counterpart changed its name to the Arts Council of Australia. In 1959, Dorothy Helmrich was awarded the O.B.E. for her services to the Arts Council of Australia
