  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Edward Gilks, sketcher, lithographer and draughtsman was born in London c. 1822. After serving a seven year apprenticeship with Threadneedle Street lithographer Thomas Dean, he worked in partnership with his brother Thomas, a wood engraver, and from 1850 on his own account. He arrived in Victoria in 1853. His lithography business ventures were not always successful and he became insolvent on several occasions. During his time in Victoria he worked also for a number of individuals, publishers and government departments. He returned to London after his retirement in 1886, where he died.
